The Karma cafe

WelcomeToTheKarmaCafe-60409I was searching for some quotes on karma and when I saw this picture here, I burst out laughing. How true it is!!

What goes around comes back is a quote which is often heard. Newton told that every action has a reaction and so on and so forth. Sometimes the reaction is instant and sometimes it takes years and in some cases many births.

So can we just sit idle and wait for our karma to act. No, we can’t. No one can be idle if not physically we will be active mentally. Krishna says in the Gita chapter 3, shloka five:

na hi kascit ksanam api
jatu tisthaty akarma-krt
karyate hy avasah karma
sarvah prakrti-jair gunaih

TRANSLATION

All men are forced to act helplessly according to the impulses born of the modes of material nature; therefore no one can refrain from doing something, not even for a moment.

So you see inaction is not our human nature, action is.

So do good and get good should be the motto. But then accidentally we may hurt somebody either by our thoughts or our action or our words, So reactions are bound to happen.

So what is the solution

A seeker on the spiritual path does all his work as a service to the Lord. He speaks of the Lord, he works for the Lord, he eats the remnants of what the Lord has left and he thinks also of the Lord only. So when the Lord comes in all the other mundane things go out. Simple solution. So when the Lord is int he center of existence, there is no bondage

Krishna says in the ninth shloka of the third chapter of Bhagvad Gita

yajnarthat karmano ‘nyatra
loko ‘yam karma-bandhanah
tad-artham karma kaunteya
mukta-sangah samacara

TRANSLATION

Work done as a sacrifice for Visnu has to be performed, otherwise work binds one to this material world. Therefore, O son of Kunti, perform your prescribed duties for His satisfaction, and in that way you will always remain unattached and free from bondage.

By simply offering your food to Krishna you can spiritualize your life. How? When you offer food to Krishna it means not only the food is sanctified but also the activities behind. Like the job which you do and which earns you money, that money  you use to buy groceries, the act of going to the supermarket and buy things….every single action is sanctified. Simple formula isn’t it.

So go ahead sanctify your life.

Why bad things happen to good people

My friend S I going through some tough times. Husband is unemployed for some years now. She has a small job which doesn’t account to much. Son thankfully did his Engineering on his own merit. The other day she messaged me that though trying very hard he has not been able to get any seat for further studies. I know S quite well. Yes she is share, talented and a very strong woman. Her husband is equally good. So why is she facing tough times?

Simple reason everyone is bound by his or her own Karma. Now what is Karma? Karma can be simply defined as

The function and activity of the living entity within the framework of his free will and under the influence of the three modes if material nature over a span of time.

A soul as such is very pure but when it comes under the influence of three modes it becomes their puppet. What are the three modes? The modes of goodness (satvaguna), the mode of passion(rajoguna) and the mode of ignorance (tamoguna).

As soon as the soul accepts this body and comes into this material body, this gunas start acting on it. Now as every action has an equal reaction, the soul starts piling karmas. These karmas will then influence ones life as well as future births.

So even though you are a very good person in this birth, your past karma sometimes may not allow you any success or happiness.

I told S about this. She said fine, so what do I do now. The simple thing is to chant the holy name. As and when you chant all the dust from your heart will cleanse and slowly it will lead you to a better life. Eat prasadam only and read scriptures.( a detailed post is here).

Alright she said what about my son.

Well I said he has his own set of karmas.

I guess the only mistake that he did was to take birth in our family, she said. Why is he suffering so, he is brilliant, charismatic, why is he not getting a good break.

Our love for our children is such that we often forget that our children are individuals too and have their own set of karmas. And have to go through the entire grind, until they are able to return back to our original home. In the Bhagvad Gita eighth chapter seventh shloka Krishna says:

Tasmat sarvesu kalesu mam anusmara yudhya ca

Mayy arpita mano budhir mam evaisyasy asamsayah

‘Therefore Arjuna you should always think of me in the form of Krishna and at the same time carry out your prescribed duty of fighting. With your activities dedicated to Me and your mind and intelligence fixed on Me, you will attain Me without doubt.’

So if one has to return to Krishna’s abode, our true home, one has to think of Krishna and remember Krishna at the time of death. How can one do that? By always thinking of Krishna and serving Krishna through one’s life, one can remember Him at the time of Death. Because only practice makes a man perfect.

Accept

Very often we get flustered because we did not get what we wanted, for which we worked hard  or what we think we deserved.

In many cases our past karma plays a very big role.

And in some-God’s will.

Remember when you were small and wanted a chocolate just before a meal and you were forbidden to eat some. You cried, you wailed, you threw a tantrum but still you did not get. Why? Because for you a meal was more important than a chocolate.

Similarly if you are lucky-God has other plans for you; something which you deserve and which is good for you. So you may aspire for a dream job or an increment but maybe you will not get as HE has some major plans for you.

You may say that here goes a loser. No. I speak from experience.  I have gone after the proverbial name, fame, money too but nothing gave me peace. Untill I let life take its course and HE to guide me. And then I got peace and bliss. So was I an escapist. No. I was just accepting the path laid by HIM.
